Wow!  Has Monday already rolled around?  I have really been enjoying myself this weekend, making a LOT of stuff!  What about you? With the creative juices flowing and three days off, I did not want to miss a single opportunity to put everything into a completed project.  With that said, today is my ABC day and I’m sharing with you my new “Quite Contrary” line through Spellbinders that will be released in March.

For the first card,  we have another basic design. There are die-cut flowers and leaves, two strips of patterned paper and a sentiment.  Now I am going to share with you a great beginner tip.  Last week I spoke about choosing just three colors.  This week I want to let you know what is absolute on most everything I create.  I choose a background.  It can be plain, colored or patterned.  I then chose a main focal point.  Here, it is the flower.  And then, I choose a sentiment.  These are standard rules of thumb for me.  I don’t even think about them anymore.  I just do them. Obviously, different types of art can vary from this.  I don’t know that I see that style always in mixed media but I think the logic behind this is, that you want the eye to float around the page and not get “stuck” somewhere.  It’s the same for colors.  Until you get the basics down, it just gets messy adding too much in there.  Once proficient, go for it!

My next card is more detailed, obviously.  I created my background with stamps and ink.  I added watercoloring by just using my watercolor pen directly onto the water-based inked image. Next I stamped and die-cut my images and adhered them to the page.  I added the pattern paper for variety and to add to the background. It was used just a little bit.  A die-cut, watercolored flower (focal point)  was added and then the sentiment stamped. Notice I added an additional color or two.
And lastly was my most technique-driven card. It has a splash of everything! Lots of patterned paper was used for the background. I used Seth Apter’s stamp for my white background piece and then watercolored it so it looked runny.  I LOVE this look.  I added his embossing folder, Gridiron on about 2/3rds of the card. Layering more patterned paper on top of the inked images gave it interest.  After that it was pretty much stamping, inking with watercolor pen and ink, and die-cutting all the designs out.  Remember, now is the time to stamp your sentiment before assembling the rest of the materials onto the card.  Adding a bow just completes the look.
So there you have it for Monday’s Motivation…nearly noon for this learn-as-you-go blogger but hey, I will get there!  Hope you learned something new today or at least liked what you saw.  I can’t wait to show you more this week.  Wednesday I will be sharing the new Art Deco line by Stacey Caron Designs and Friday will be my treasures from my hunt last weekend!  You won’t believe what I got and what I paid for it all!  I’m leaving you all with this…my craft room pic.  NOT pretty.  Time to get cleaning.  :).

all cards are beautiful but as a lover of layers (that would be a good new title for me) I really like the third card – love Seth's stuff – so subtle but adds a great punch
