So Saturday was just one of the nicest days ever. Yes, the junkin’ was awesome but it was much more than that. First of all, it was very beautiful in Arizona. It was the perfect temperature with just a whisper of a breeze. And, I was out and about in this absolutely adorable neighborhood in Phoenix, loving all the houses, trees and yes, grass, when I stopped at an advertised garage sale. Probably average by most people’s standards and certainly not ginormous by any means but today, it wasn’t about that. At. All. I had no idea what waited beyond the note on the gate coaxing me to take a peek inside the backyard.
So tell me, have you ever found someone that you have had an immediate kindred spirit with? Someone that you felt so at ease around, as if you had known them your whole life? Saturday I met Jeanne. Smart, lovely and aged with just the perfect amount of gray sheen to her hair. And oh, she saw me because I was the only one looking at her magnificent lot of buttons. And she told me so.
And they were incredible. All of them. And yes, there were more…many, many more. And yes, we struck up a conversation. Kind, sincere, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. That about describes Jeanne. And as much as she held my attention, and she probably enjoyed every minute of it, she also took me away from the stress in my life that I had allowed to creep in over the past few weeks. I was so fortunate to get to see her vast “collections” of seashells, baskets and rolling pins as well as a few more of her glass buttons inside her home, no less. Next thing I knew, Jeanne was asking if I wanted something to drink and to have a seat at the table for awhile. You know what, it felt so good :). Absolutely did not expect this on one of my many “in-a-hurry” garage sale trips. I got to slow down and enjoy the beauty around me but mostly sweet Jeanne. Before I left, she gave me her phone number and told me to call her and come back over. She would love to show me ALL her buttons. And you know what, I’m going to do just that because as busy as I have let my life get, there are far too few of times like these for Jeanne and for me. Garage sailing my passion…you bet. But people and friendships, you can’t buy that at any bargain price. Ever.
XO,
Debi
P.S. Jeanne had to show me this very old, old book that of course, I had to buy. She knew all about the author and the poetry inside. All new to me but who says history and English lessons have to come from inside a classroom? Thank you Jeanne. And love my new basket too!
