Well hello friends and happy summer! Super excited to be sharing a project that I participated in called “The Plain Box Society”. Designer and StencilGirl® Team Columnist, Tina Walker is the brain child behind this creative endeavor and I was really glad I jumped in on the challenge. (Please make sure to check out her blog and StencilGirl®Talk and see all the unique boxes designed by different creatives!) The idea was simple. Just decorate a plain box (provided) using StencilGirl® stencils. That was it. Everything else was up to me. For those of you who know me, I love to push the envelope, and in this case, the BOX! So here is what I created. I have a few rough step-outs in case you want to recreate this project.
To create this box, I cut the flattened box in half evenly so that each half had a lid or closure. I assembled the box and then it was time to paint. I love this color combination of Granny Smith, Bougainvillea, Tango Fresco Paints by PaperArtsy and Twilight Blue by Anita’s All Purpose Acrylics and White acrylic paint. I used Rae Missigman’s Repetition Stencil, MaryBeth Shaw’s ATC Mix Up 1, Seth Apter’s Numbers and Text and Texture Explore and Desiree Habicht’s Rosie ‘O Stencil Club 06-2018.
I used different complimentary paints and stencils on top of the patchwork areas of paint. Love MaryBeth’s tulips! And see Seth’s smudged squares? Love the imperfections!
And of course, mark makings were in order. I used a white pen and made circles and X’s and stitch lines.
Had to add a few sentiments here and there…
To create the clear, hollow cube I measured and cut thin acrylic sheets that were made to fit the inside dimensions of the box. The sides were held together with clear tape. The cube was just a bit smaller than the brown box itself. I inserted it into the top of the box first, adhering it again with clear, red tape. Before inserting the cube into the bottom half of the box, I made a stand for my cupcake as seen below.
I cut a circle out of the center that was just a bit smaller than the cupcake itself and then made small snips all the way around the circle. This helped to secure my cupcake. I stenciled and cut out a flower using the Rosie ‘O stencil using white cardstock and Bougainvillea and Tango paints, adhered it to a toothpick and inserted into my cupcake. I put my cupcake holder inside the bottom box and inserted my cupcake. Lastly, I adhered the lower potion of the acrylic cube to the bottom box.
This is how it looks all brown…

And here again is the completed project…
I hope you enjoyed this project. Thanks for stopping by. If you would like to see what other creatives did, click on the links below or go to the StencilGirl® Blog!

This box is so fun and so unexpected. I think it would be pretty awesome to be gifted a cupcake in this way. I love it!
