Happy Monday! No better way to start the week than with a Blog Hop and *GIVEAWAY*! Feeling especially lucky to “get wrapped” up with the fabulous Emerald Creek CS , Artist and creative “Imaginator”, Seth Apter, my sweet & talented friend, Eileen Hull of Sizzix and of course, my favorite fresco chalk paints by PaperArtsy. I was provided with Eileen’s ScoreBoards XL-Wrapped Journal die-cut from chipboard and set free to create whatever I wanted. Too much fun and no boundaries! Of course I had to sneak in my favorite stencils from StencilGirl® too! Here is my spin on the journal. Only wish I had more time to play because the possibilities are endless!
Creating this cover was pretty easy and the reason why is this, though I do not specifically look for ideas in terms of a particular project, I am constantly keeping my mind open to anything I like or catches my eye whenever I am out and about. Inspiration is found anywhere and at anytime. It’s in magazines, home decor stores, sidewalks, nature, walls of buildings, practically anywhere you want to see them. (Once I even found inspiration on a sewer lid!) A while back I was in Paducah, Kentucky and saw this corrugated aluminum siding on a building, naturally rusted up. I loved it, like a LOT. (If only I could have taken a piece of it home!) So I snapped a photo and saved it on my phone. And when projects like this one come up, I am able to go back to my photos and start dialing in to see what might fit and pretty soon my creative wheels start spinning. What if..? Could I__? How could I do this? :). Eileen’s journal seemed to be a perfect substrate to demonstrate this look.
And here is how I got started. I sprayed my journal with silver metallic spray paint…
Then I cut strips of chipboard/heavy cardstock that would fit on the front of the journal cover. I cut five but you could cut more or less. I painted them with my PaperArtsy paints/ Seth Apter colors. I have my favorites but I really liked playing with PA/Seth’s “Double Denim” and PA’s “Snowflake” for a change. (They made up the light blue-gray look.) Barely noticeable is “Green Patina” but it is definitely a nice hue. (See complete list at bottom of post). I grunged the strips up with more paint and misted them so they would run. I splattered paint too and then added bits of Vintage Beeswax embossing powder (heat set) and adhered Chunky Rust embossing powder with collage glue.
When I got them the way I liked them, I adhered them to the cover. Because the little details are important to me, I added MaryBeth Shaw’s stencil, “Planner Words 4” by StencilGirl® with a white pen up in the corner. Also, I applied tiny strips of copy paper that had been painted the same color as the cover onto the front using collage glue. I wanted it to appear as if the paint was peeling so I didn’t attach them all the way.
Applying ephemera, like the oven dial and broken measuring stick seen here, add interest to the cover.( I also used one of Seth’s Coffee Ring die cuts behind the number.) I cut out the numbers “25” from heavy cardstock using Seth’s stencil (here) as a template and painted them with Chocolate Pudding, Little Black Dress, Green Patina, Smoked Paprika, and Mahogany, Terra Cotta, all PaperArtsy paints, a lot in coordination with Seth. When they were dry, I adhered some Emerald Creek/Seth Apter Chunky Rust embossing powder onto the edges again using collage glue and embossed the littlest amount of Rocky Road embossing powder to the bottom edges. I attached them to the dial using Scrapbook Adhesives by 3-L foam dots. (Love these dots! They are permanent after about a minute.) Adding some black carpet thread/string and a stamped sentiment by Tim Holtz/Stamper’s Anonymous (here) completed the cover.
To do the side of the book, I used this for inspiration… Pretty cool, huh???
Using corrugated cardboard and silver spray paint, I cut a binder edge to fit the side of the journal. Adding paint and more embossing powder gave it a weathered look.
The little details make a difference so I added this key hole and some doo dahs after I thought I was “done”.
And here’s my entire journal. Now to start on the inside. Stay tuned for another post!
