Well I’ve had many of you ask how I created this card I designed for Tim Holtz’ using his Poinsettia 3-D Folder for his Christmas release of Sizzix products. So today I am giving a photo tutorial to show how easy it is to make this card. The longest part is the coloring but it is not hard.
For the card base I used Neenah Solar White 80 lb. Cardstock. I cut the sheet down to fit the 3-D folder. You can probably get two, maybe 3 out of each sheet. I then applied the folder to the cardstock, making sure to use the correct platform and embossing plates.
Next, I colored. Now I like to color in layers. Not everyone colors in the same manner as I do but this is what works for me. I used Copic Markers for this card. You can see the numbers of each one so that should help you if you decide to use my color palette.
I like to use the lightest shade first. Sometimes I color the entire flower in the lightest color as seen here. It helps with the blending later on. Sometimes I get lazy or forgetful and then I create a bit more work later, but hey, I’m having fun so it’s all good! Notice that my coloring is not perfect. It’s hard to see all those embossing veins. Just do your best. I show you how they all get covered up in the end! (I am the queen of hiding blimishes…lol.)
Now add the next shade darker. (The marker colors all coordinate.) I brush in from the outside of the petals.
Now for the deeper shade..
Sometimes I go back in with the lightest shade of color or even the middle one and blend the colors together so you don’t see the stroke marks. And, sometimes I like it looking like it has those brush marks. Your call. You are the artist! Add bits of yellow and green to the centers of your poinsettia. No flower is just one color.
Now we are ready for the leaves. I like adding unusual shades just for variety so I added this aqua. It reminds me of the 50’s. This optional color is not shown above. It is Copic Marker BG10. Color in the stems now.
Now I start to add a heavier dose of greens, blending as I go.
It’s important to add deeper shades of green to make the leaves look dimensional. I think these almost look velvety. 🙂
Once the leaves are done, I use the blending tool and add Mowed Lawn Distress Ink lightly to the areas between the flowers.
These next two parts are like cake decorating. 🙂 It’s all in the details! So I wanted to make this card look rich and really make it a vintage 50’s feel so I added bits of gold using a fine gold marker. I really like the Premium Deco Color Gold Marker by Marvy. It creates very thin lines with just the slightest brush. You don’t have to put gold on everything or outline the entire piece. Adding just a few splashes of it here and there really makes it nice. I almost left the card as is because I loved this look. But you know, those 50’s card had all that clear shimmery glitter!
Ah, and here comes the “sprinkles”. I got my glitter from JoAnn’s, I think. I love this clear stuff. (I might even say I hoard it.) I misted the top of my card lightly with spray adhesive then sprinkled the glitter on top.
I stamped the sentiment onto a small strip of cardstock using black ink, embellished it with Mowed Lawn around the edge, attached a small piece of velvet ribbon and adhered it to the card front using a foam dot. Lastly I attached the card front to the white card base.
Well there you have it. Easy peasy? If you’re interested in any of the products that I featured today, check out the links below for more information. Hoping to come back again with a few more Tim Holtz projects for Christmas shortly. Thank you so much for stopping in.
XO,
Debi

You are a true artist, Debi. Thank you so much for this tutorial…this card really stood out for me when I was watching Tim’s video. I love the coloring and the vintage feel of it….coincidentally, I have the stamp that the sentiment came from.
