Spellbinders CHA Roundup-Day #3

9 Dec

Hi Everybody!
I’m Debi Adams and I’m new to
the Spellbinders Designers line up. I’m currently an in-house Creative Designer here at Spellbinders and am super excited and honored to
be launching my new line, “Quite Contrary” in January.   It is a line of trendy stamps with coordinating thin dies as well as steel rule dies for making crepe paper, tissue paper and fabric flowers.  Art is my passion and I feel
fortunate to be able to have a job that allows me to create all day :).  In this post,  I
am going to show you how to create just one of my flowers but be watching for me to post further floral instructions so that you can
complete the entire project at the bottom of this post.  Such a tease!  Here is my Simply Anemone flower we will be making…

This is the marker-colored flower…

Ok so I couldn’t wait.  I had to give you a quick sneak peek before you got to the end of this post. This is my home decor project using my flowers!  What do you think?
My whole intention was to create quick, easy and inexpensive flowers or,
if you want to be artsy then you can make them  lengthy, expensive and detailed!  Ha!  Makes
perfect sense, right?  Really, they are a lot of fun. You can make them as simple or complicated as you want. Again today, I will only showcase
one flower.

I took the photo below so you could see all the
supplies I used to make this entire decor piece but I also wrote a list of the supplies needed for just the flower:
Spellbinders® Platinum™ Machine: PL-001
Contour™ Die: Simply Anemone #SR-037
Crepe paper or tissue paper of your choice
18 gauge wrapped floral wire
Floral tape
mini styrofoam balls-no more than 1/2″ in
diameter (Get them in the Christmas section now!)
Wire cutters
Stamen
Optional: Markers

Now, let’s get started!
First, die-cut flower and leaves from crepe/tissue paper.  I used crepe paper for this flower.  You will need at least 3 of each petal or 5 of just one size.  This is a steel rule die so that means you can cut all 3-5 layers of tissue/ crepe paper at a time!

1.  Insert the 18 gauge floral wire into the styrofoam ball using a bit of hot

     glue on end of wire.
2.  Cut enough green tissue paper to cover ball and leave a tail to twist.
3.  Beginning at base of ball, attach floral tape and begin pulling tape as you
spin the stem.  Continue for a few inches then tear off tape.
4.  Add stamen to area around ball using floral tape and tear off after several
     inches of turning.
5.  Begin adding flower petals by slightly gathering/pinching each petal in center and
adhering to ball with floral tape.  If you want to add additional color, simply use markers at the
base of the flower petal. See pic above for marker-colored flower.
6.  Continue adding petals until the desired shape of the flower is met.  Tear
off tape at bottom of stem. Attach green base to flower if desired by punching hole in center of
base and sliding it up the stem.  Adhere in place.  Because this part will not show on my home
decor project, I eliminated this step.
7.  Attach leaves to stem using floral tape. (not shown)

If you cut your flower from crepe paper, you can manipulate the petals a bit, especially if you die-cut them vertically to the folds of the paper.

Wow!  Hope that wasn’t too hard!  The most difficult thing is learning how to pull the floral tape.  It takes a little knack but once you got it, you’re good!  You will want to come back again soon to see more of my floral  dies demonstrated.  And this…this is my home decor project!  Get your flower skills going and let’s get this project made!

Don’t want to forget to mention the other dies used in the deer head piece:

SR-036-Oopsy Daisy
SR-039 Hydrangea Florets
SR-042 Pocketful of Posies
SR-043 Trailing Leaf & Vine

I think you made these dies just for me.I have a huge ziploc storage bag of tissue paper and crepe paper. Making flowers from it is one of my very favorites things to do. I find it soothing. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of your collection. My friends would probably think you named it after me too!

Beautiful flowers. Thanks for the tutorial. I love the addition of steel rule dies. Like that you can cut heavier material with them as well as several layers at once.

Love you deer head project. Usually a deer head
is rather masculine, but your one is great for everyone.
I would love something like this in my living room. The
flowers, of course, are just fab and thank you for your
    flower tutorial.

My grandmother was a florist and I helped in her shops for a couple summers. The way you make the flowers reminds me so much of the time my grandma and I were preparing flowers (live ones) for wedding bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages. For me to make tissue paper flowers would be a nice homage to her. Thank you for showing the technique.
