Today is Day 2 of the StencilGirl® & Aladine, Seth Apter IZINK Blog Hop Collaboration & GIVEAWAY! Yesterday, Seth showcased five artists unique styles and creations and today the StencilGirl® team is revealing theirs. If you have not played with Seth’s new products by Aladine, you will be in for a real treat. I chose to work, and by work, I mean, PLAY with his IZINK Dye Sprays but he also has Pigment Inks and ICE Translucent Glaze, all of which are amazing and work so well with stencils! Pretty sure you will have great results with whatever product is calling your name. And then of course, ANY stencil from StencilGirl® is going to make you look and feel like an artist. There are like a gazillion stencils to choose from, all designed by amazing artists. (It’s always hard for me to pick which ones to use!) Although I have seen Seth demoing his products in class, I had not played with them prior to this project so for the first time I cracked open his Dye Sprays . To get started, I just played. A lot. I changed out stencils and colors and, I will admit, I got messy because that is the kind of artist I am and for me, it is the only way to discover what works, what doesn’t, what I like and how to get to a happy place. Here is what transpired at the END of my play but hold on because I will show you what my early beginnings looked like too!

Ok, so let’s talk the background. It was created by using a dirty gelli plate. That means I didn’t clean my gel plate entirely from the last time I used it so that when I applied my navy and white acrylic paints to the plate with a brayer, whatever remaining dried paint that was on there, came up with the new paint. Ah, that is the stuff I love! This is the time that it pays to play dirty!

Next I sprayed IZINK Dye Spray in Blue Moon onto the substrate. There were areas that had no acrylic paint and it absorbed up the fast drying dye immediately. The spray resisted some of the acrylic paint but filled in where there were missing spots. (See white spots above). What I loved was how it punched up the color. And that blue is divine! I then did a tiny spritz of Spring Green in one area that had been white.

Once the background was set up, I began working in my stencils. I used the Goldmine spray over the top of two of Seth’s stencils from his ATC Mixup #2 collection. Love that set because of the tiny details in each one. Great for detailed work and for small projects. I added the spray significantly to the right and then bits to the left and the bottom. (You know the rule of threes). Gorgeous gold btw.

I love the fact that some of the mist flew onto other parts of the substrate.

I incorporated some of Seth’s dies into this piece, misting them with Goldmine and a touch of Blue Moon. Dies used were Sunburst , Coffee Ring and Citrus Slice. Hoping he is bringing these back.

Using Seth’s stamps from Impression Obsession called “Journal Jargon”, I added two messages to my art. “Bohemian”, was stamped onto a piece of sprayed, mixed media cardstock using Hero Arts® Intense Black Ink and then stitched on one side with black thread. “Wanderer” was stamped lightly on the opposite side, directly onto the media.

So there’s that.

Now onto the play. When you get your sprays, take some time to just play. Pull out your favorite StencilGirl® stencils and go to town. Mix and match patterns and colors. Watch how the colors respond to each other. Use both the stenciled paper and the stencil itself to make more designs. I actually enjoyed the simplicity of the stencils and dyes and almost stopped here.

I paired Seth’s ATC MixUp stencils with Andrew Borloz’s stencil, Retro Tiles Large using the Green, Blue and Gold sprays. Look at how vibrant the colors are and how well the stencils play together!

It wasn’t long before I began another creation using Seth’s ATC MixUp stencils, Carol Wiebe’s Caves & Ladder from StencilClub 2018 and Andrew Borloz’s Retro Tiles Large. Again, I misted the gel plate art with Blue Moon, Goldmine and Spring Green. It’s a total WIP. Totally. But it’s growing on me. Need a few mark makings or stitches.

So there you have my spin on things. No doubt Tina Walker has created magic with her amazing creativity and unique style. She’s next up on the hop.

I may have drooled a little. And, once I stopped taking in the details of your artwork I noticed what appears to be an empty and very cool shelving unit behind your artwork. First, how do you even have an empty shelf? And, second, what is the piece. Looks really interesting.

I love the different textures you use in your work. I like using modeling paste with stencils but I’ve often wondered if modeling paste can be colored with paint without changing the texture of the modeling paste. I would like to use brightly colored modeling paste on a black background. Love your work.
