I love playing with different collage elements when creating my art. It brings me back to my scrapbooking days of rearranging items until the perfect combination is found. For today’s project, I used leftover pieces of stenciled or painted pieces as well as ephemera. It really is nice to hold onto those tidbits. It saves time and adds variety to the art.
Some pieces were painted with PaperArtsy paint, some with acrylic paint, and some were actually shibori-dyed, cotton paper. I applied Kristie Taylor’s Grandmother’s Kitchen stencil from StencilClub 2018 to the back, far left piece, using blue and brown watercolors. If you have never applied watercolors to stencils, the time is now! It adds a softness to the substrate.
For embossing, I used several designs from Seth Apter’s ATC Mixup stencil as well as Seth and Mary Beth Shaw’s collaborative stencil from the Magic Mystery Tour to several of the smaller pieces using WOW! Clear Ultra Slow Drying Embossing Ink and then sprinkled and heat embossed the design with Crusty Copper (front long strip) and Weathered Gold (the piece behind it), as well as Seth’s Coffee Ring Die-Cut. (That die is a staple in my box. You might want to hint to Seth that he needs to have them made again 🙂 And as for the Tour, you will never want to miss out on one of those sooooo, make sure to get on Ephemera Paducah’s mailing list for future workshops.)
Once I got my collage elements sized and arranged the way I liked, I adhered them in place, making use of my sewing machine and white uni-ball pen for extra details. And of course, I almost always use black cording in a circle somewhere. Not sure there is a meaning behind that (I’m sure it’s subliminal, or not, lol) but it’s more that I like circular layers.
So let’s talk about the different colors of embossing powders. As you can see, the decision as to what colors to use was very difficult. I found it easiest to set the embossing powder samples next to my painted/ephemera pieces and then choose.
Some blended in and some definitely enhanced the pieces. I went with the darker colors because I felt it gave it variety and brought some warmth to the piece.
The colors of powders from left to right are:
Sea of Tranquility, Weathered Gold, Blue Moon (duplicate-whoops! Guess I liked it a lot), Crusty Copper and Etched Platinum. I love that they all have different pieces of color in them. The Gold for example, has hues of amethyst and some black and the Blue Moon seems to have blue, aqua and clear.
So that’s it from here. Next on the hop is Mary C. Nasser. Bet she has been up to some aqua goodness! Check out her post. If you get lost, you can hop back on here…

My husband always asks me if he can throw away any paper scraps since I love utilizing them in my collage work. More often than naught I keep the scraps to use sooner or later. Really like the blue and brown color harmony and the asymmetrical balance of your work. Love that you stitch in to the paper as well. Will have to try using watercolor with stencils since I like the softer edges you achieved in your collage. Thanks for sharing your work!
